Capstone Project (2019)

For my senior fall, I did a capstone project. This project investigated and critiqued Christianity, Gender roles. These installations form some sort of paradox because while the themes and messages are dark, the materials used are child-like. Thus when seen from afar it seems to be a simple children's project but as the viewer moves closer to it they discover the installations' true meanings.

The Creation of Christ (2019)

This installation critiques how Christ was created/conceived. I have always found the belief to be odd. So, I decided to come up with a more outrageous theory to how Christ was conceived. My theory is that Mary had an incredible orgasm and that caused the conception. Mary, who is rendered with gouache on watercolor paper, sits on her chair with her legs on the arms of the chair. Her hair is made of embroidery thread and her shawl is a died paper towel. This contrast achieves the paradox mentioned earlier. In addition, the viewer is able to move Mary's arm which makes her finger herself. The viewer can play God and make Mary conceive Christ.

Expulsion of "Adam and Eve" (2019)

This installation criticizes the hetero-cis relationship and archetype known as "Adam and Eve". As a non-binary person, it is important to me to have a representation of non-cis individuals in art. So, I decided to make Adam and Eve androgynous so that it is up to the viewer to decide who is "Adam" and "Eve". This installation moves by having one figure cover their face and the other cowering. I chose these actions to emphasize the humiliation of "Adam and Eve" as angel Gabriel exiles them. The paradox is seen with the child-like background, the angel's wings, and all three figures' hair.
